Oudtshoorn was founded in 1847 and named after Baron Pieter van Reede van Oudtshoorn. The town is the principal centre of the Klein Karoo, and often referred to as the feather capital of the world, which is synonymous with ostriches and ostrich farming. Oudtshoorn also was the home of the renowned Afrikaans writer CJ Langenhoven. The spectacular Cango Caves are in the nearby Swartberg Mountains.
