Founded in 1879 on the farm Nooitgedacht in the eastern Mpumalanga, later proclaimed a town and named after Ermelo in Guelderland, Holland. All but one of its houses was destroyed by British forces during the South African War of 1899-1902, after which the town was rebuilt. Ermelo lies on the upper reaches of the Vaal River and is known as the garden town of the eastern highveld.
